Writing Instructions

Hippokrates, the Yearbook of the Finnish Medico-Historical Society, publishes scholarly articles and other writings, such as book reviews, in Finnish, Swedish and English. Articles can be empirical, theoretical or methodical studies or overviews of current literature or research. Accepted material will be published in print and on the web. Articles are peer-reviewed and other writings evaluated by the editors. Writings in which the following instructions haven’t been adhered to will be returned for correction before peer-evaluation. The journal does not pay writer’s fees.
General writing instructions
Recommended length for an article, including bibliography, is approximately 30 000–60 000 characters without spaces (15–30 pages with a font size of 12 and line spacing of 1½). Naturally, writings either shorter or longer than this can be offered for publication, but with long texts it’s best to consult the editors. It’s preferable to use footnotes. As writers are used to different practices, the journal is, however, flexible on the mode of notes. When referencing a website, the date of information retrieval should be added. As the writings are published online, five keywords should be listed right after the heading.

Writings can be submitted in Finnish, Swedish or English. Articles written in Finnish and Swedish must contain an abstract in English. An article written in English must contain an abstract in Finnish or Swedish. Recommended length for an abstract is 1 000 characters without spaces.

Article manuscripts should be in text format (e.g. rtf or Word, not pdf) and submitted via email to the editor-in-chief suomenlhs [at] gmail.com by no later than August of the year of the volume that it’s intended to be published in. The language of all writings should be revised and the titles and headings concise. Before submitting an article, please make sure all the pictures have captions, titles are consistent and works cited in the text are written in italics. Avoid abbreviations where possible.

First page should have the author or authors’ name, degree/title and email address. Because the articles are peer-evaluated anonymously, the title page should not contain the name(s) of the writer(s). The manuscript will be reviewed by at least two independent reviewers with relevant expertise. Peer-evaluation is done anonymously and referees’ comments will be forwarded to the writer(s). The journal will keep regular hardcopy or electronic records of the key review information. The author will receive three free copies of the yearbook their writing appears in. The writer also has a chance to buy additional copies of said yearbook for half the going rate.
Pictures, charts and graphs
Pictures, charts and graphs should be clear and well thought out. They should be numbered from number 1 onwards in the order in which they appear in the text. Pictures, charts and graphs should be headed with a title or caption that describes its content independently of the primary text. Graphs should be on separate pages from the text and be professional and fit to be printed (not PowerPoint, etc.) The titles or captions of pictures, charts and graphs should be written in the language of the abstract as well as the language the primary text is in.

Citation rules and guidelines apply for pictures, charts and graphs as well as text. Pictures should be relevant to the text. Picture sources should be clearly referenced. It is the writer’s duty to sort out the pictures’ copyright and right to use issues and get a permission to publish from the owner(s) of the copyright(s). The writer must also take into account the right to privacy of patients that might be depicted in the pictures. There is no set limit on the number of pictures. However, if the number of pictures in relation to the length of the text is high, the editors may choose not to publish all of them. The Finnish Medico-Historical Society will not recompense the writer(s) for the cost of the picture(s).

The pictures should be supplied as separate files in jpg or tiff format and must be fit to be printed (minimum resolution 300 dpi). Pictures should not be attached or incorporated into the text file, but sent via email to suomenlhs [at] gmail.com. If you’re unable to send the pictures via email due to their size etc., please contact the editors of the yearbook. Similarily, in all other things concerning the substance and form of the article or pictures, we recommend you to contact the editorial board.
