Hippokrates, Annales Societatis Historiae Medicinae Fennicae is a scientific journal published once a year. The Publication Forum of the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies has classified it as a level 1 publication and given it the peer-review label.
Hippokrates is the only scientific journal in the Nordic countries focusing only on medical history. It was established in 1983, and the first volume came out in 1984. Since the beginning, the journal’s aim has been to act not only as a publication channel for the field but also as a forum for meeting and discussion. The most important principle guiding our work is multidisciplinarity; the journal welcomes writers and texts of various kinds from the different fields dealing with the history of medicine and health. Examples include the history of medical science, the history of science more generally, the history of healthcare, the history of veterinary medicine, the history of pharmacy, the history of dental medicine, the history of mental health, the history of medical ethics, the history of different healing traditions and various kinds of social history relating to medicine and healthcare. Since the writers submitting texts to our journal represent several fields and traditions, we are open towards different standards, customs, and styles of writing. We wish to promote dialogue and cooperation between natural sciences and the humanities regarding our mutual research topics.
Hippokrates is committed to encourage open science. New volumes will be openly available and accessible on the internet 12 months after being published; within the limits of this embargo, Hippokrates also allows the writes to share their articles in the research portals of their universities. The digitalisation project of Hippokrates is currently in progress, and past volumes will be published on the OJS-platform.
