The society organises various activities for its members as well as the public. Our events include presentations, lectures, discussions, and excursions.
General meetings are held twice a year as decreed by the statutes: one in Spring and one in Autumn. The also society organises events of a less formal nature, such as excursions. In the recent years, the society has, for example, visited several museums, hospitals, and botanical gardens.
Presentations and lectures are most often held in the general meetings in Spring and Autumn. Additionally, we have organised a public lecture series on the history of diseases jointly with the Helsinki City Museum and participated several times in the Night of Science at the House of Science and Letters. In 2022 the society launched an informal medical history club in the form of regular meetings discussing recent research and other topics relevant to the field.
Our international activities are mostly planned together with the sister societies in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland. The most important form of this cooperation is the Nordic Medical History Congress, which is held once every two years in one of the Nordic countries. The congress was last held in Finland in 2013. The society was organising the congress for the year 2021, but it had to be postponed by two years due to the covid-19 pandemic. The next congress will be held in Helsinki in May–June 2023.
The society also organises events in cooperation with The Finnish Society for the History of Science and Learning and Aurora, the Society for the History of Dental Medicine. You can participate in our events even if you are not yet a member!
