Gunnar Soininen (1904–1973, until 1934 Gunnar Johnsson) was a physician who, in addition to his medical career, contributed significantly to the research of medical history in Finland. He was a founding member and the first chair of the society.
Since 1983 the society has organised the Gunnar Soininen Lectures, which aim not only to promote research on medical history but also to pay homage to Soininen’s life’s work and his significance to the field. As of now, 16 Gunnar Soininen Lectures have been held, with the latest in 2015. As lecturers, the society invites persons who have in their work contributed considerably to the history of medicine and healthcare.
Föreläsarna tilldelas ett diplom tillsammans med Gunnar Soininen-medaljen, som sällskapet beställde av skulptören Kauko Räsänen 1965.
